Miwatj Health Services Supporting Those in Need

There is one clear goal that underpins all that we do at Miwatj Health, and that is to improve the health and wellbeing of those living in our communities. Our services have a strong focus on allied and public health—rather than just treating illness and diseases, we work to prevent them through education initiatives.

Miwatj Health services are comprehensive. An example of this is the offering of the Commonwealth Psychological Support Program—an additional Mental Health Program service that supports clients who might otherwise fall through gaps.

What is the Commonwealth Psychosocial Support Program?

Previously known as the National Psychological Support Measure, the Commonwealth Psychosocial Support Program (CPSP) is a short-term service for people with severe episodic mental illness who may not be eligible for the NDIS. The CPSP is funded through the Northern Territory Primary Health Network (NTPHN), who are funded by the Department of Health.

CPSP Eligibility at Miwatj Health

To access CPSP services at Miwatj Health, East Arnhem residents (16 years and older) must have, or appear to have a mental illness that impacts on their daily life and functioning. This might include:

  • Mood disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance use disorders
  • Trauma-related disorders

Clinical diagnosis is not required; however, the person must currently require support. Once enrolled in the program, psychosocial supports can be provided to:

  • Develop social skills and friendships
  • Build relationships with family
  • Manage money
  • Find and look after a home
  • Build skills and qualifications
  • Develop work goals
  • Stay physically well (including exercise)
  • Support with drug, alcohol and smoking issues

The Miwatj Health Commonwealth Psychosocial Support Program aims to improve recovery outcomes, client capacity, and reduce demand for expensive interventions in the short term, and increase social and economic participation, and independence in the long term.
