Milyakburra was established as an outstation in the late 1970s. and currently has a population of approximately 180 (2016 Census).

Located on the central-eastern section of Bickerton Island, on the Groote Archipelago, between Groote Eylandt and Blue Mud Bay.

Bickerton Island is privately owned Aboriginal land and the landowners are represented by the Anindiyakwa Land Council. Of the island’s total population, 88% are Aboriginal and all reside at Milyakburra.

Fast Facts

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders represent 88% of the population and the primary languages spoken are Anindilyakwa and Yolŋu Matha. (2016 Census).

Community Services

Milyakburra has a coeducational combined school, serving Pre-school, Primary School (T – 6), Middle School (7 – 9) and Senior School (10—12). Other services include Lagulalya Store, Australia Post and Milyakburra Airport.
