Mamarika Ward
Mamarika is the name given to the dry season south easterly wind that blows almost constantly from April to September in the Western Gulf of Carpentaria.
The communities of Mamarika Ward in the Groote archipelago are represented by the Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC). Manganese mining has existed for over 50 years and the current partnership is with Groote Eylandt Mining Company.
The Groote Eylandt Aboriginal Trust (GEAT) manages royalties on behalf of the Warnindilyakwa people. A minimum 50% of income is held in a preservation fund for future generations, with the remainder of funds channelled into Health, Education, Community and Employment endeavours.
Primary Health Care Clinics in Mamarika Ward are currently operated by Top End Health Service (NTG). Miwatj Health has a permanent renal dialysis service in Angurugu, supporting haemodialysis clients to return to country. Miwatj Health also coordinates the eye health program in this region.
